Dear Troop 19 Committee Members,

If you are receiving this e-mail, you are a registered adult with Troop 19, otherwise known in "scout speak" as a Troop Committee Member.  This e-mail discusses new information from Council regarding rechartering Troop 19 and the expectations for Troop Committee Members.  Take a deep breath and please, do not shoot the messenger.  ;-)

This year, as a requirement of recharter, all Troop Committee Members must complete four mandatory training courses.  The good news is all four courses are available as on-line courses that you can finish from home.  The courses you must complete by October 15, 2009 are as follows:

  1. Youth Protection Training and Youth Protection Test
  2. Boy Scout Fast Start Training
  3. "This is Scouting" Training (a bit long - about 1 hour to complete)
  4. Troop Committee Challenge Training

To complete the training on-line, go to www.myscouting.org and create an account.  You will need your 9-digit registered scout ID# - if you don't know it, call Kay at Rainbow Council at 815-942-4450 and ask for it.  Click on the training links and complete the required courses.  Make sure you print your certificate of completion for each course and drop it off with me at a Troop meeting or mail it to Maya Raab 24349 Crowfoot Court Plainfield IL 60585.

Each Troop Committee Member must also pay annual dues of $15.00, due by October 15th.  Again, find me at a Troop meeting or mail your check (payable to Troop 19) to me.

In addition to the requirements from Council, our Chartered Organization, the Knights of Columbus, requires that all registered adult leaders complete a "Protecting God's Children" workshop which is the Catholic Diocese's version of youth protection training.  St. Mary's Church offers a number of dates or you can register with other area churches.  Click on this link to find a date and time that works in your schedule.  https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_list2.cfm?theOrgID=17156&theme=0.  Many of you may have completed this course for religious education training.  If so, simply get me a copy of your completion certificate.

Why, you ask, would you continue to be a Committee Member given these new requirements?  There is one major benefit to being a registered adult leader with the pack.  In the event you are injured while participating in a Troop 19 event, you receive supplementary medical benefits that cover any medical costs not paid by your primary medical insurance.  You do not receive medical coverage under any BSA blanket policies if you are not a registered adult.

In addition, anyone who intends to camp overnight with Troop 19 on any future event must have a valid Youth Protection Certification even if  you are not a registered adult with Troop 19.  If you do nothing else, take the time to complete this one course - it's easy and fast and only enhances the safety and well-being of our scouts and adult volunteers.  Remember to print and turn in your certificate of completion.

If you elect not to continue your status as a Troop Committee Member, you are always welcome to attend Committee meetings at any time.  At tonight's meeting, the Troop Committee decided to hold future meetings on the second Sunday of each month from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m (immediately prior to regular Troop meetings).

All of the above information will be in the minutes of the Committee Meeting and the Troop calendar that will post to the web site in the near future.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the new requirements.  I will track completion of these training requirements closely for each Troop Committee Member as I work to complete the annual recharter process for Troop 19.

All the Best,

Maya Raab
